Des Plaines, Chicago based WYEN radio station initiated the phenomenon, as we now know it today of request radio, interacting with the station’s listeners and creating the radio station you could talk to.

As the station grew it attracted quite a crew of announcers who moved on to be familiar and colorful personalities across radio land. The likes of Bill Elliott, John Zur, Val Stouffer, Bruce Davis, Chris Devine, Dan Diamond, Cindy Bravos, Louie Parrott, Bob Roberts and Garry Meier, to name a few; also last and not least the author himself, Stew Cohen.

Now News Director at Star 105.5 radio out of Crystal Lake, Stew recently reminisced about his time at WYEN and his lifetime in radio with leading local community magazine, McHenry County Living.
Here’s what he said:-

“If you have ever thought about writing a book, my one simple advice is this: do not procrastinate. The time to write a book is now- not next year or when you have “more free time”, because that “more free time” is an illusion. Here is a brief overview of what it takes to be an author.”
iUniverse author Rio Olesky on writing

“I wrote a book. Actually, I’ve written two books. This is quite surprising since I’ve made my living for almost 40 years by using the spoken, not the written word. I am a professional astrologer with a global clientele. I read horoscopes. I have also taught classes in astrology at the beginning as well as the intermediate and advanced levels for over 35 years. I enjoy talking to people. It’s something that has come easy to me.
Author Manuel Antonio Lopez uses this perspective in a scientific approach to achieving a relaxed state of mind – thereby addressing the cause of such symptoms as hair loss – in his new book, “A Guide to Winning Mind Games: Keep Your Hair and Your Health” (published by iUniverse).

“This book ties scientific evidence, engineering principles and practical experience together into a handbook accessible to everyone and serves as a resource to understand the power to make life changes by controlling stress,” Lopez explains.

In his book, Lopez identifies hair loss as a symptom of a larger problem, rather than an issue to solve on its own. Lopez theorizes and offers support for the idea that symptoms such as hair loss can be reversed by addressing the root cause of the issue – stress. By sharing his personal experiences, Lopez directs readers through a list of specific steps he followed to reverse the stress, depression and hair loss in his life.

“There are many books written on controlling stress and the effects of stress,” Lopez writes. “Most of the science has been related to results and symptoms, not the causes. This book looks at the causes and methodologies that are essential in developing self-directed methods of reversing the effects of stress, such as hair loss.”

“As a five-time cancer survivor,” Smith writes, “I wanted to communicate to people that God does love us and have a plan for our lives, even when it doesn’t make sense.”

After Smith’s fourth fight with cancer, her friends and family encouraged her to start a support group. Instead she started a blog. “I Choose to Laugh” is a collection of essays from Smith’s blog that seek to find the humor in cancer. Smith, who believes that laughter is truly the best medicine, includes valuable advice for patients about doctors and dealing with chemotherapy. She also dedicates a section to caregivers and friends of cancer patients looking for strength and encouragement.

Overall, Smith stresses the importance of faith in the healing process, citing examples of how her faith in Jesus Christ kept her strong and positive throughout her journey.

“Faith in God is what carries us through the most difficult hours,” Smith asserts. “This book is to encourage people as well as provide information to equip the cancer victim to be their own best advocate.”
The 2014 Bologna Children’s Book Fair kicks off on March 24th and continues through March 27th. The show features children’s books exclusively and hosts a wide variety of titles from around the world.

“9 Voices” unites the voices of nine now-grown siblings as they share their memories of growing up together. Each chapter showcases the voice of one sibling telling a precious story that honors the family and the beloved parents, Leland and Josephine.

Through joys, sorrows and painful goodbyes, “9 Voices” captures the spirit and camaraderie that these nine siblings shared and presents a powerful image of family.

“The stories told within this manuscript engage, delight, alarm and may even evoke a belly laugh or a tear from the reader,” says Pamela. “Several events are recounted in every chapter, but these events are different based on the perspective of the individual's memory. The aggregate memory of the childhood of this family spans 30 years.”

An excerpt from “9 Voices”:

“We attest that all of us are mostly healthy physically and generally healthy mentally and spiritually. Writing our memoir has been cathartic for some of us, and exhilarating for others. And now, with this challenge behind us, we look forward to another new adventure.”
Palacios teaches readers how to modify their behaviors, shed frustration and achieve their goals.

“El arte de convivir en sociedad y evitar el rechazo” looks closely at problems in social behavior and human interaction. It offers readers an understanding of the problems, and Palacios provides guidance on how to handle and avoid the problems through a change in attitude. He describes the book as a course in psychology practice that helps people develop charisma and grace, tools he believes lead directly to the achievement of goals and social acceptance.

“There are countless situations and examples of everyday life where it is possible to show why we persist in states of immobilizing anxiety and despair,” Palacios says. “And that is where our behavior is not the best. We can change that with our attitude.”
M. Krause’s newest sci-fi novel in the Blackmailed Secrets series, “c-Surfer: Sabotage Threatens Sol System Defense’s Newest Fighter Ship” (published by iUniverse) picks back up with her series’ protagonist as he deals with the loneliness of witness protection and attempts to prove himself in the face of personal and professional hardship.

Private Cory Reddick, born Geoff Anders, testified against a vicious gang and was led into witness protection in the first book, “High Orbit Hero.” In “c-Surfer,” Cory starts over with Sol System Defense and is transferred to the new c-Surfer ship. Once there, Cory is torn. He wants to prove he is the best one to fly the new ship; however, he’s worried his turbulent past will compromise the safety of his crew.

“Cory Reddick is a young man hiding from life as much as he is hiding from his old enemies,” Krause explains, “but he grows into a soldier willing to risk his life for his friends and risk breaking his heart in an attempt to locate his family.”

Set at a time when gravity fields are used for ship propulsion, “c-Surfer” takes readers on a perilous journey from the comfort of a well-established military base in the asteroid belt to an unfinished station orbiting Neptune. And to give a little something extra to her readers who enjoy action, adventure and an underdog to cheer for, Krause introduces unique new technologies for readers to speculate about.

An excerpt from “c-Surfer”:

“‘Not sure, sir. Seekers are loose.’ Fifty marble to golf ball-sized globes of orange sealant came flying into the cockpit from their storage cubbyholes in the walls. They were designed to follow air escaping from the ship, split at the break, and release the sealant.”

"Random Reflections of a Looney Bin" is based on true events – described as "faction" by the author – based on his early experiences working at a large mental institution on the English border of Lancashire and Yorkshire, and several institutions around the world since. He describes his time spent at Halley Hospital from the late 1950s through to graduation in the mid 1960’s and in other facilities into the 1980s. His stories provide valuable insight into what it was like to work in a large mental institution during that time and he suggests that some are still like Halley today.

"The old mental health facilities are a closed door to most people," Kerkham says. "This book will shed a little light and provide a lot of laughs about living and working in a mental health facility."

"If you don’t like the expression Looney Bin, I don’t give a flying fart. That’s what they were. Bins where we deposited all that we didn’t want to know or care too much about in our society. They are also places of much joy."
(PRWEB) January 29, 2014 In author Norm Minor’s new romance novel, “Until The Gull Returns” (published by iUniverse), a Boston Brahmin must do all she can to survive with her heart intact as intrigue, heartache and betrayal invade her life and change it forever.

“This is not the typical romance novel,” Minor says. “It has some very strong characters who have to make difficult decisions, but express their conflicting feelings.”

Becky Cunningham was born into an upper-crust Boston family and, devastated by her parent’s divorce, grew up trying to be a “good girl.” She’s engaged to marry Derek, a pleasant enough fellow, but although Becky loves him, she’s not in love with him and instead pines after Chandler, the man of her dreams. She only sees Chandler occasionally in real life, but he has a starring role in all her erotic fantasies. Becky’s best friend and polar opposite, Jane a free-spirited California girl, schemes to bring Becky and Chandler together.

An excerpt from “Until The Gull Returns”:

“Becky sat there alone in her thoughts, the aborted call to Jane now gone from her mind and replaced by just the hint of a nervous smile on her face as she ran a mental check over the events of the last few months. So much had had to be planned and discussed, changed and then changed and then changed again, and now the temporarily-derailed wedding seemed to be unfolding without a hitch.”
An excerpt from “Men from Cribaar”:

“All the buildings were round and everything was white, even the hills behind the buildings were white. I saw rails above buildings that looked like monorails in a theme park. I could see strange looking cars moving on them and I could not grasp the things I saw. I felt my knees buckle under me and Miim grabbed me up in his arms and gently laid me down on the large circular bed. ‘This looks like something out of a movie. I keep thinking I’m in a bad dream.’”

In her book, “The Seasons of Cherokee’s Life,” Sandra Roberts provides readers with a heartwarming story of the human condition, told through the eyes of Cherokee, a loyal canine. As Cherokee reflects on his life and companionship with his owner, readers will find a sense of hope and consolation in the midst of the bittersweet final hours of Cherokee’s life.

“This is the story of a dog’s deep bond with his mistress as he walks beside her, watching her transform into the courageous and independent woman he has always believed her to be,” Roberts said.

Roberts draws upon her own past experiences with grief, lack of confidence and self- doubt to breathe life into the struggles of Cherokee’s owner, Alicia.

“Alicia is the perfect example of how so many of us get in our own way, and allow fear and self-doubt to prevent us from tapping into our inherent strengths,” Roberts said.

Cherokee and Alicia’s journey reveals the healing powers that animals possess and the life-changing influence they can have on the human experience.
(PRWEB) January 29, 2014 As a biology professor in California State University, Bonham Richards shared his passion for ecology with his students. In his new book, “World without Cats” (published by iUniverse), Richards combines his love of science fiction and cats in the thrilling story of three scientists who face a rapidly-spreading disease that threatens to wipe cats off the face of the planet.

“Recently, the BBC published an article suggesting that mammals probably harbor as many as 320,000 ‘new’ viruses—that is, viruses that have never before been observed,” Richards says, quoting a September 2013 BBC article written by Rebecca Morelle. “We have witnessed such viruses over the last 50 years or so with HIV, SARS and continually appearing new strains of influenza and other viruses. It is not at all preposterous, therefore, to imagine such a new virus having the capacity to wipe out a species.”

Set in Camarillo, Calif., “World without Cats” centers around three scientists who encounter a terrible feline hemorrhagic disease with the potential to eliminate all cats worldwide. Veterinarian Vera Barnett at first suspects the virus originated in the lab of her lover, molecular biologist Noah Chamberlin but accumulating observations suggest otherwise.”

The disease soon spreads all over the world, killing millions of cats. Epidemiologist Angelo Kraakmo is on the case and joins Vera and Noah in their investigation, but it’s a race against the clock as 80 percent of the cat population dies off and the planet must deal with the potential loss of an entire species.

Richards thinks of his book as a warning about the dangers of these undiscovered viruses. He says, “I’d hope readers would be inspired to think about how much we take our animals for granted and that there is a real risk that something we don’t anticipate could wipe them out.”
I found it terrifically hot, unbearably humid, the streets crowded, the air polluted and worse still—everyone spoke Cantonese; I was overwhelmed. I locked myself in my flat and turned the A/C up to Frigidaire. I had painfully studied Mandarin and had just come from three years in Tokyo where I’d learned Japanese—I now deemed my studies worthless and yet another uphill cultural climb threatened to capsize me. Worse still, I had no job, but my husband rushed off to work in his suit every morning with a cautious look back at me as I stood dolefully staring out frosty windows at amazing high-rises, lush vegetation, and the sparkling harbor. It was ridiculous. My curiosity quickly overcame my stubbornness. I could not stand there for three years doing nothing.”
Writing a 5star ratingnovel should be no less exciting and perilous than a trek to the North Pole or a spinning ride down the Amazon in a round animal iUniverse Scene One from Riding the Tigerskin coracle. I personally write standing up at my computer in a dark closet, far away from the noisy distractions of my busy farm, but in my heart I can see the world. What I didn’t foresee was writing a historical novel; I didn’t even like history—but life does take you on strange journeys . . .

I consider my own novel a late child of my life because I wrote it long after I’d passed all of my personal deadlines for publication—publishing not by the time I was 20, 30, or 40, but now at 51. It comes after a decade of serious illness, cancer ten years ago, and the past six years nearly bedridden from chronic Lyme and fatigue. But, as some of you might know, illness can have its gifts. I got the chance to finish this book I’d begun years ago when I lived in Hong Kong, years ago when I was full of energy and time for everything but sitting down with patience. Life, illness and rewriting have all taught me patience. Yes, writing is hard.”

Parents who fought 8 years for justice for their late daughter tell their story

“I think Kirsty would have been proud of me”.
Those are the words of Chas Pearce, who has just published a book about his 17-year-old daughter who died at Basildon Hospital after a series of failings.

The devoted father, who lives in Pitsea, has spent eight years fighting for justice for Kirsty, who died in 2003.

The book, from iUniverse Publishing called Kirsty: A Father’s Fight for Justice, goes into depth about Chas and wife Peggy’s battle to get the doctors who looked after Kirsty on that fateful night to admit they did things wrong.

Kirsty, who had learning difficulties, died after doctors failed to realise the seriousness of her condition, and did not send her to the intensive care unit until it was too late.

In November last year an inquest finally took place and concluded failings in the care Kirsty received contributed to her death. Mr Pearce said:

“At first, the book just started as something for family and friends, so everyone would know what we had been through. But the story has got bigger and lots of people have become interested and want to know what happened to Kirsty.

It is a real relief to see the book in published form. Peggy and I are very pleased to have got to this point. We have used our favourite picture of Kirsty on the front cover of the book and I think she would have been really proud. She would have said ‘you kicked butt dad’.”
