Irene Lape was raised by her grandfather, whose own grandfather fought and died in the Civil War. Growing up, Lape’s grandfather shared a number of stories with her about her great-great grandfather. “I had a special interest in the battle of Antietam because this battle’s outcome gave President Lincoln the ‘victory’ he needed to issue his controversial Emancipation Proclamation,” she explains. It was this reason that she called her book, “The Turning Point” (published by iUniverse).
“The Turning Point” was written with three themes in mind: the deeply significant historical event the story tracks, the challenges faced by two young people caught in the maelstrom of this event, and the spiritual dimension of their experiences that Lape believes infuses all human life.
Fifteen-year-old Meg Hamilton, the main character of the story, was orphaned after the deaths of her mother and grandfather and is desperately unhappy living with an aunt and uncle in Sharpsburg, Md. Her biological father, whom she has met only once, is a Virginian in General Lee’s invading army. When she learns that the invading force is moving in the direction of Sharpsburg, where she lives, Meg sets out to see if she can meet her father and perhaps be taken back into his life.
When her best friend, Daniel Brandt, part of the Dunker community in Sharpsburg, learns of her plan, he decides to accompany her. As they travel together their relationship becomes more than a childhood friendship, and Daniel feels called to join in the fight against slavery.
“The Turning Point” transports readers back to a place and time when momentous historical events shaped the future of a nation and brings them into the lives of those who were caught up in them.
