About the Book
This book is actually the script of author Darryl Lacy,s play about the writer/poet Nikki Giovanni. Nikki, (aka Yolande Cornelia Giovanni Jr) is also an eminent commentator, educator and activist. She has been writing since the 60s and she is currently a distinguished professor of English at Virginia Tech.
Nikki is universally admired for her honesty and vigor, is acknowledged as being a poet of both individual and shared growth. Nikki G: A Portrait of Nikki Giovanni in Her Own Words brings a glimpse into how the poet lives as a poet. Also as an influential force in the verbal poetry movement within Afro- American culture, Giovanni’s words are pure theater.
About the author
Darryl L. Lacy comes from Buffalo, New York, he is actor, director and playwright, establishing his own company DARRYL LACY (DL) PRODUCTIONS in New York City in 1987.Educationally, he has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater from the State University College in Buffalo and a Master of Fine Arts degree in performing arts management from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
Since he founded the production company he has directed and produced seven plays including Nikki G: A Portrait of Nikki Giovanni in Her Own Words, which he scripted. He has also directed four plays outside of his company, since his career began in 1984. During his career, he has directed and produced a total of seventy-four artists, and provided career opportunities for a host of people in the creative arts world.
Darryl has been a community organizer for Harlem non-profit organizations and he is an ordained deacon. Among his many achievements and acknowledgements are the Johnson Preparatory School (JPS) Achievement in the Arts award in 1991. A year later, in 1992, JPS recommended him for the acknowledgement he received during a benefit at the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall for his success as the founder and producing director of DL PRODUCTIONS.
In 2011, the Harlem Arts Alliance (HAA) honored him for, his leadership and relating culture with community. With the HAA, Lacy started the Harlem Arts Alliance Theatre Interest Group of producers, directors, theatre managers, dramatic writers and performing artists. He was appointed to the Advisory Board of the Upper Manhattan Arts Service Team, to help the cooperation between HAA and the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, created to enhance the delivery of technical assistance to artists and arts organizations throughout Northern Manhattan.
Surprisingly it took until last year for Darryl to author his first book by self-publishing, with iUniverse, his script, Nikki G: A Portrait of Nikki Giovanni in Her Own Words.
2013, the year of the self-publishing author?
iUniverse blog posted recently that this year could be the year of the writer, but maybe it’s the year of the self-publishing writer as what a great start to 2013 iUniverse and its authors have had- with some great starred reviews from Blueink Review, with Julia Ibbotson winning the London Book Festival Biography category for her memoir, “The Old Rectory: Escape to a Country Kitchen” which has now been quickly followed by Darryl Lacy winning the NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work, Debut Author for “Nikki G, A Portrait of Nikki Giovanni in Her Own Words.”
