In the new novel “Memoirs of a Tiger” (published by iUniverse), Ajit Arabindhan Muttucumaraswamy takes the reader on a journey through post-independent Sri Lanka, with the help of a child trapped in a changing world.
With the passing of the Sinhala Only Act, a newly liberated Ceylon, later Sri Lanka, begins a reign of oppression that ushers in decades of civil war. The Sinhalese population is seen by the smaller populations of Indian Tamil, Sri Lankan Tamil and Moors as asserting their dominance over the minorities.
Ravin Cumaraswamy sits in the Colombo Airport waiting to leave the battle torn Sri Lanka for London. Falling asleep, he travels back 50 years to when he first experienced the horrors that Sri Lanka currently faces.
Forgotten history and cultures are brought to life as Ravin travels through villages, towns and the countryside for a way out of the broken world he now lives in.
An excerpt from “Memoirs of a Tiger”:
How did people feel when they landed in Colombo Airport, called the Bandaranaaike Airport and named after the man had who began a process of change that had ended up in civil war? What did passengers think when they saw blown-up planes standing on the tarmac? Did they think this part of the airport was a scrap yard? Were they aware that they were coming to a country that had been torn apart by a civil war, with the rebels in the north wanting to rule themselves?
“I hope readers finish ‘Memoirs of a Tiger’ and have an understanding of the colonial roots which cause the conflict to surface,” says Muttucumaraswamy. “A good knowledge of the country will be gained.”
