The story of Superman – an orphan travels to Earth and discovers his superpowers and amazing destiny – has been told and retold to audiences for decades. In her new young adult fantasy novel “King Chance’s Epic Adventure: A Boy’s Tale” (published by iUniverse), Lorie Hagen tells a similar story, but in this case, the young orphan returns to his home world to discover his true purpose.
At only 2 years old, Chance is found by the Poorman family, who takes him in as one of their own when his parents can’t be found. By the time he is in first grade, Chance has already endured many hardships, including being picked on because he is the smallest boy in class. But his misfortunes turn around when the amulet he carried when the Poormans found him begins leading him down a mysterious new path – and to a magical, new land where the fate of the world lies in his destiny.
An excerpt from “King Chance’s Epic Adventure”:
Just then Chance saw that Chips’s light had started to fade. “My grandbee was afraid you might not believe,” said Chips. “That is why he created that for you,” he said, pointing to the stone amulet around Chance’s neck. “He created that for you and put it around your neck and told you to be brave and that one day you would return to Lanar and restore the balance to the land.
Hagen says “King Chance’s Epic Adventure” carries important messages about bullying, fitting in, making new friends, family, parenting and loss. “I want readers to know that there is always someone in this world who will stand by you and be your friend no matter what,” she says. “I want them to understand the importance of family and never giving up.”
