Inspired by the real-life events of one family, author Richard W. Ellison immortalizes their experiences in his new trilogy. The first installment, “Monmouth in the Morning: Book 1—A Gannon Family Trilogy” (published by iUniverse), introduces readers to the Gannon family and follows their adventures from 1913-1915.
“Monmouth in the Morning” is a classic American saga, following the Gannon family as they move from Monmouth, Ill., to South Dakota on the Brule River. Parents Tom and Helen are joined by their three children: John, 13; Sallie, 10 and 8-year-old Betty Jean. Family friends include a local teacher, the mayor, bank owner, grocer and doctor. John befriends a Native American, Blue Eagle, and learns about his new friend’s lifestyle as the two cope with the tension that still existed between whites and Native Americans at the time.
“It is an interesting story in a different time and place,” Ellison says of his book, “revealing the hopes and dreams of a family at the beginning of the American Industrial Revolution … a success story, a saga, not without its problems, where people achieve more than they imagined possible.”
